VP Harris Rallies Detroit Crowd on Labor Day, Decries Trump’s Labor Policies
In a spirited Labor Day rally in Detroit, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed a crowd of 445, celebrating the importance of unions and labor rights.
Speaking at the Harris-Walz event, Harris emphasized the role of unions in advancing fair pay, benefits, and safe working conditions, noting, "Every person in our nation has benefited from that work. You may not be a union member but you better thank a union member."
Reflecting on her own experiences, Harris shared how her parents took her to demonstrations in a stroller, highlighting the power of collective action.
She declared, "When unions are strong America is strong," and underscored that the strength of leaders is measured by whom they uplift.
The Vice President also criticized former President Donald Trump, accusing him of attempting to "pull us to the past" by blocking overtime pay and minimum wage increases, and appointing anti-union figures to the National Labor Relations Board. The crowd responded strongly, chanting "Trump’s a scab" and "we're not going back."
Addressing a shout from the crowd about the future, Harris responded, "Let’s just get through the next 64 days," focusing on the upcoming election rather than speculation about future terms. She noted the campaign's underdog status but praised Michigan's track record of victories.
Before Harris took the stage, union member Tyrese described the challenges of being a union member under Trump, prompting a visceral reaction from the audience.
As Harris concluded her remarks, the crowd enthusiastically cheered, echoing chants of "we want Kamala" and "we're not going back," underscoring the rally’s energetic and supportive atmosphere.
