Arsonists targeted the French high-speed rail network early Friday, disrupting travel to Paris for about 800,000 people, including Olympic athletes en route to the Games' opening ceremony. French officials denounced the attacks as "criminal actions," but found no direct connection to the Games.
Paris prosecutors have launched a national investigation, noting that the crimes, which include property damage impacting the nation’s “fundamental interests,” could lead to 10 to 20-year sentences.
“It’s an awful way to kick off the Olympics,” remarked Sarah Moseley, a 42-year-old traveler at Paris's Gare du Nord, who learned that her train to London was delayed due to the rail disruptions.
